Oil Painting • Award Winning Painter William Simpson, Instructor
April 13, 20, no class on the 27th, May 4, 11, 18 (5 Thursdays)
9:30 am – Noon
This course will concentrate on refining composition, color and drawing, to better focus your work and get the most from the image you chose. All approaches to painting are welcome, as well as all skill levels.
Tuition: $220. WAC members receive 10% discount.

Clay Sculpture The Figure in Terracotta • LeaAnn Cogswell, Instructor
April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15 (6 Monday mornings, 5 with live model, final session for firing prep)
9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
 
Working from life, build the figure using this time-honored material.  You will hone your powers of observation and knowledge of the human figure through 15 hours with the model. The sculpture will then be hollowed-out in preparation for firing. This terracotta is a water-based clay that has a beautiful finish when fired, but can also be finished, using various methods. Examples from history and the studio will be shown. This method offers a simple and direct way to create and preserve your original sculpture.
Tuition: $265. Model fee is additional and divided among students. Clay is approximately $30 and firing is an additional fee. There are no member discounts on this class. Class size is limited due to space. Register by calling 860-614-0583 or 860-508-3186.


Introduction to Pastel PaintingKaren Israel, Instructor

Explore the pastel medium with one of CT’s best pastel artists. Bring your own pastel paper, pastels (charcoal can also be used) and your favorite photos. Photos should be printed on glossy 8.5 x 11 paper

Pen & Ink Drawing • Nan Runde, Instructor
April 18, 25; May 2, 9, 16 (5 Tuesdays)
1 pm–3 pm
Explore traditional and innovative approaches to drawing with ink. Students will experiment with a variety of mark-making and shading techniques, including the use of ink washes.  The course will also offer the opportunity to try out different types of pens, papers and inks, as well as a variety of approaches to creating an ink drawing.

Introduction to Watercolor • Luciana Heineman, Instructor

For those new to the medium and those who have some experience, explore the fine art of water color with one of the best in the field!

Watercolor Hand Painted Collage • Carol Ganick, Instructor
April 19, 26; May 3, 10, 17 (5 Wednesdays)
1 pm–3 pm
This class will instruct you in ways to paint tissue paper and rice paper with fade resistant watercolor paints and ink to create vibrant and more permanent works of art. The instructor will focus on abstract and impressionistic applications of the papers you create.  Because this is a quick and freeing approach to creating works of art it is possible to finish a piece in one class session. In addition to learning the best materials to use and compositions to begin the process, you will learn how to finish your work to make a long lasting, protected surface which can be displayed without glass. This class is open to all levels.

Cartoon Writing and Drawing for Teens (an Introduction)
Ken Fredette, Instructor (KenFrets Comics)
April 20, 27; May 4, 11 (4 Thursdays after school)
3-5 pm
You’ll develop a story line and then learn working lines and simple shapes, creating the foundation of character design, form, gesture, expression.

Creating Art with Gourds (Saturday Workshop)
Ceil Rossi, Instructor
Saturday, April 22, 9 am – 5 pm

Learn to plan, design, wood-burn, paint and finish your own creation. Rossi will provide the paints, temperature controlled wood-burning tool, and all embellishments for you to complete your special piece of art. We will be using a variety of ink dyes, alcohol inks, acrylic paints, patinas and clay. You will be provided with a cleaned gourd ready for art using the above techniques.
Tuition: $140. WAC members receive 10% discount.
Material Fee: $12 (payable to instructor).
