Solo show Christopher Mir
Christopher Mir's paintings present a world populated by mythic figures, creatures, machines, and fragments of ambiguous forms. These elements are often positioned within idealized landscapes in dream-like circumstances. Mir’s paintings invite us to experience a series of paradoxical relationships and unsettling juxtapositions. His figures and landscapes are drawn from specific sources yet remain anonymous; his painting style is relatively tight and refined, but his works are emotionally evocative and resonant. Mir’s narratives are equally complex and replete with provocative dichotomies such as, the mystical versus the physical, the spiritual versus the secular, and the primal versus the futuristic. Opening reception 5/8 5-7 PM
– Made possible through a generous gift from Alice and Dan Ferraina with support from the George and Grace Long Foundation.
A Different Time, A Different Place
March 6 - April 24
This exhibition, A Different Time, A Different Place, features Connecticut artists Stanwyck Cromwell and Cora Marshall, and testifies to the importance of time and place in their work. Both artists draw inspiration from their African heritage and their origins in two different Americas, yet they reveal their connecting and diverging perspectives in distinctly different ways.
Mr. Cromwell has chosen paintings, drawings, and sculptures from various series, including his black-eyed peas series. Viewing his collective works as “an embodiment of all his experiences as a human being and a Guyanese-born artist living in America,” he pays tribute to his Caribbean/African roots and juxtaposes past and present in vibrant colors, symbols and metaphors such as black-eyed peas. He uses multiple overlays to create depth and imaginary mindscapes in works that are figurative, abstract, and surrealistic.
Dr. Marshall focuses on the past in order to understand the present. She delves into her African American and Native American ancestry in the explicit subject matter of her paintings. The mixed-media works in this exhibit are portraits from two related series, Runaways! Going, Going, Gone and To Be Sold, both of which were inspired by actual advertisements in 18th and 19th century newspapers. Dr. Marshall movingly portrays the humanity of enslaved people, who had only been represented as mere chattel. She challenges us to reflect on the importance of remembering our ancestors and what it means to be free.
Please join us in viewing this exhibition and in exploring the different perspectives that the artists reveal in their work as well as their profound connections derived from their shared ancestry. Ponder, too, the ways our own lives diverge and are connected to theirs through time and place.

Scott Sanchez , Classical and Jazz Guitar
American born guitarist Scott Sanchez is often recognized by audience members, concert presenters and reviewers for his musical and masterful performances on the guitar. Referring to his British debut Classical Guitar Magazine (London, England) said, "Sanchez drew the audience into his playing with his excellent performance… a performance which at times was introspective and at others extrovert. Sanchez made light work of playing what at times looked like some fearsomely difficult passages." Soundboard Magazine (U.S.A.) has referred to Sanchez's playing as "colorful and poignant." Some of the highlights of Mr. Sanchez's past concert seasons have included recitals and masterclasses for London's St. Bride's Church; Dorset, England's Bournemouth University; Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; Boston's King's Chapel and California's Ventura Classical Guitar Society.

Rosewood Chamber Ensemble, Barbara Hopkins, flute and Judy Handler, guitar.
The Rosewood Chamber Ensemble performs songs and dance music from early America. Their repertoire ranges from familiar Stephen Foster songs to lively dances and newly rediscovered music of the nineteenth century. Particularly interesting are the background stories they tell about the period, the music, and the flutes. Barbara plays these concerts on authentic Asa Hopkins flutes. One of these flutes is made from rosewood, and that combined with the rosewood in Judy's guitar inspired the name Rosewood Chamber Ensemble.
Barbara is a cousin of the early American woodwind maker Asa Hopkins, who lived and worked in Litchfield, Connecticut. She moved to Hartford fifteen years ago to play in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, having no idea that Asa Hopkins existed, or that her ancestors were from Hartford. She has "come home" in a way she never dreamed of.
Barbara is the flute teacher at the University of Connecticut and owner of the Cardinal Classics record label. She has released two solo CD’s, Telemann Methodical Sonatas, Vol. 1 and Short Concert Pieces for Flute and Piano. She has her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University, and is using the research skills she developed in her doctoral studies to find scores of nineteenth century American music. Barbara has been a top prize winner in the National Flute Association Competition and the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition, and was awarded a fellowship to Tanglewood Music Center, where she had the honor of playing principal flute under Leonard Bernstein. She earned her Master of Music from The Mannes College of Music, and her Bachelor of Music at The Hartt School.
Judy Handler received a Bachelor of Music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and a Master of Music degree from The Hartt School. She also earned a Certificate from the Vila-Seca i Salou Conservatory in Spain and a Diploma of Merit from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Italy. She has given concerts and workshops at numerous venues throughout the United States including the University of Arizona, Commons Theater in Chicago, the Boston Classical Guitar Society and the Guitar Salon in New York. As co-founder of the Connecticut Classical Guitar Society, Judy helped develop one of the largest groups of its kind in the United States. Judy performs nationally with her husband, guitarist/mandolinist Mark Levesque. They have received critical acclaim for their CDs, Passion, Two Guitars Live! and Acoustic Blend. They are also featured on five CDs produced by the Connecticut Classical Guitar Society

Illusory Meeting Places
exhibit celebrated a twenty-five year dialogue between two New England artists, Karen Dolmanisth and Kathryn Myers. The title of this exhibition was drawn from a poem by the French surrealist writer Louis Aragon, “Under the hat of the Infinite, I escape indefinitely; do not search for me in my illusory meeting places.” The two artists first met while teaching in the Art Department at the University of Connecticut in 1984. They shared a studio at the Mansfield Training center (a former institution) in Mansfield, CT, while living in the old mill town of Willimantic, CT, both evocative places haunted with many layers of history, memory, and spirit. This convergence of two individuals and potent environments, although itself transient, left an imprint that effected many phases of their subsequent creative work and research, which has shared a synergy of ideas and interests. Myers exhibited recent paintings and Dolmanisth created a site-specific installation.
